Serra da Estrela Public Waters asks for savings

The company Águas Públicas da Serra da Estrela (APdSE), based in Seia, in the district of Guarda, calls on consumers in the municipalities served so that, in the face of the drought, they use water “efficiently”.

APdSE is an inter-municipal company formed by the municipalities of Seia and Gouveia (Guarda district) and Oliveira do Hospital (Coimbra district) and since 2021 it operates and manages the water and sanitation services in the three municipalities.

Due to the drought situation in the country, the company launched the campaign “Save water today for tomorrow. Don’t spend more than necessary.

“Portugal is facing a serious drought situation. Since water is an essential resource for life, it is urgent to save and reuse much more. Be aware, use water efficiently”, said the APdSE in a note sent today to the Lusa agency.

The company recalled that the consumer, with small gestures, “can save thousands of liters of water that are essential to use or reuse for other purposes.”

Thus, the company makes the following recommendations: “intensify all the water-saving care you already have; intensify water reuse; slightly close the safety taps to reduce the flow of water at the inlet; if it rains, store water to reuse it; do not fill tanks and pools”.

The APdSE called, for example, on consumers to reuse water whenever possible, take quick showers, brush their teeth or hands with the tap turned off, half flush the toilet, use fully loaded washing machines and dishwashers, fix leaks in pipes, don’t waste water when watering, and don’t hose down cars (opt to use a bucket instead).

More than a quarter of the continent’s territory It was at the end of June in extreme drought (28.4%), with an increase particularly in the South region and in some places in the North and Center interior, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The rest of the territory was in severe drought (67.9%) and moderate drought (3.7%).

On the last day of May, 97.1% of the territory was in severe drought, 1.5 in moderate drought and 1.4 in extreme drought.

At the end of June, the percentage of water in the soil remained very low throughout the territory and especially in the North and Center inland regions, in the Tagus Valley, Alentejo and Algarve.
