A total of 74.8 million euros will finance 630 new scientific projects within the framework of a contest organized by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) whose provisional results have been made public this Wednesday.
The projects, which will be financed by the FCT, were selected within the framework of this year’s edition of the competition for research and development projects in all scientific domains, which included a 15.4% success rate.
Compared to 2021, in 2022 there are 79 most recommended projects for financing, after evaluation, with a slightly lower total amount, of the order of less than 100 thousand euros.
The published results, more than four months after the application submission deadline, can still be challenged by the candidates, in this case by the scientific institutions, in a preliminary hearing.
will be supported two categories of projects: 225 projects with a maximum duration of three years and a maximum financing of 250,000 euros each and 405 so-called exploratory projects with a duration of one and a half years and a maximum financing of 50,000 euros each.
Medical and health sciences, engineering sciences and technologies, and natural sciences are the scientific areas with the most selected projects.
The researchers who lead the approved projects are mostly women (55.7%) and a part (11.3%) are foreigners, of 22 nationalities, who work in laboratories in Portugal and coordinate 71 of the works that will be financed, according to a note published on the FCT portal.
4,093 admitted applications were evaluated – out of a total of 4,101 delivered – by 557 international experts, who considered “the scientific merit and innovative nature of the project, the scientific merit of the research team, the viability of the work program and the contribution to the accumulation of knowledge and skills ”.
FCT adds that the 630 new projects approved are added to the 2,301 currently underway.
The call is made annually for the financing of scientific research and technological development projects in all scientific areas.
The Foundation for Science and Technology is the main entity, dependent on the Government, that subsidizes scientific research in Portugal.
