The international program for attracting and accelerating startups Protechting is now in its 5th edition and the objective remains the same: to find Startups around the world that present innovative solutions in the areas of Insurance (Insurtech) and Health (Healthtech) that can be applied by the mentor companies of the project in both Areas, in the different countries in which they are present worldwide and that also have concerns regarding sustainability. In the previous 4 editions, Protechting received requests from more than 50 countries and attracted more than 800 startups.
The application period for Protechting 5.0 had already ended 2 months ago, but later there was a demanding selection process of the 133 applications received from all over the world and a work of adjustment and preparation of the selected Startups for the live presentation and streaming in various companies of the Fidelidade Group (in Portugal and in different geographies), Fosun and Hospital da Luz. Recently, at the Innovation Matching Day, the 11 selected startups were able to present directly to the different companies/business areas/geographies the proposals to develop pilot projects, in the field of Protechting.
“Protechting 5.0 is a fantastic opportunity for all of us. This is the opportunity to be challenged by new ideas, new entrepreneurs, startups, who come to transform the system and the way of operating in these sectors”, he began by saying Miguel Abecasis, member of the Executive Committee of Fidelidade, at the opening session. “There are innovative companies that are breaking new ground in terms of how companies leverage data to improve risk profiles, how they sell to customers, promote and strengthen synergies, cross-sell, up-sell, etc. There are different dimensions of these businesses that are being challenged by disruptors and startups,” she added. For the manager of Fidelidade, this must be the watchword: “Fidelidade, Fosun, Hospital da Luz and Multicare have and are inserting more and more innovation into their DNA. The contribution of the different elements, the different business areas of our companies, to shape and strengthen the business and the narrative behind the ideas that will be presented today, will also help to be closer to success, by participating, and I hope to prosper – in Protection 5.0″.
The morning was dedicated to the Insurtech area. Given the motto for the rest of the day, it was time to valentine wu, Executive Secretary of the Fosun Foundation, to share his vision with the audience present, either in the auditorium or via streaming. “30 years ago Fosun was a startup, today it has become a company with 24 billion annual revenues and 366 million consumers. He grew up in resilience and entrepreneurship. Through continuous strategic updating, Fosun remains committed to its mission to serve and create happier lives for one billion families around the world. Health, Happiness, Wealth and Smart Manufacturing are the four segments in which it has left a significant mark. The goal for the future is to continue improving its product competitively, as well as its values”, he shared and then added: “Now, the vision we share is to cultivate talent and support the development of startups that contribute to society and help create happier lives for everyone. through innovation.
after daniel scratched, Responsible for the Fidelidade Transformation Center, he referred to the work already done with the Startups present at the Innovation Matching Day: “In this fifth edition of the program, there is an intensification of the joint work between the teams (corporate and startups) to seek to respond to the challenges concrete information that we have at hand in various areas relevant to the Fidelidade Group (of Insurance and Longevity Assistance) It has been gratifying to work with these startups in an increasingly easy and fluid collaboration model, which gives us more Confidence in Win-Win results for both parties.”
With goals set and eyes set on the future, it was time for the selected startups to take the stage and begin their pitch. Each startup had 5 minutes to make their presentation, as well as space for questions from the attendees and, in addition, a quick evaluation and feedback.
With the launches finished, there was still time, before the morning break, to attend the How to Pilot Training session, led by Miguel TangierCo-Founder of Beta-I, as well as the Trends in Insurtech panel, which included the interventions of Joao AndradeCEO of Big Start Ventures, gonzalo parreiraVice President of Associations for Lovys, and Gonçalo Consiglierico-founder of Visor.AI.
The central theme of the conversation was the future and, in terms of trends, Joao Andrade did not hesitate to share: “One of the trends that we think about more and more is the way risk is evaluated. Another secular trend that influences every other industry is the population, in terms of aging, in terms of health care costs, as well as the growing need to live a longer but healthier life.” “One trend that I think is pretty obvious is startups partnering more and more with other startups that add value to parts that we’re not experts at. And this is something that is happening more and more in both corporations and large companies. We have to show that we can do business. Being in a startup that wants to innovate is wanting to get closer to the market, grow”, it was the turn of gonzalo parreira speak, followed by Gonçalo Consiglieri. The Co-Founder of Visor AI did not hesitate to point out that in the future it is necessary to change the way of looking at certain insurers. “When we compare with other sectors, we generally tend to understand that traditional insurers are a bit bureaucratic and too attached to their older processes – this is not the case with Fidelidade, but it is the case with others – and it is very important to move that mentality ”, he stressed.
The morning was drawing to a close, but before the break it was time for startups and partners to gather at 1:1 Meetings. Here, the objective was to understand in more detail what each startup does and what contribution could make sense for the different companies/areas within the Fidelidade Group.
technology and health
“Let’s talk about health, the role of technology and what innovation is in this field. Most of the startups in this program came from the healthcare field. This is an area where innovation is really happening.” Those were the words that started the afternoon.
“We have been doing a lot of things to make sure that we can make progress in health care. The first step is to create a network. Another advance has been the way we look at medicine,” she began. francisca leite, Executive Director of Hospital da Luz Learning Health. For the director, the importance of startups in this entire process is undeniable. “If we really want to move forward, we need to tap into these people and companies with new and innovative ideas. They bring a different and extremely valuable perspective. They learn from us, but we also learn a lot from them. It’s teamwork.”
now for Rita Gomez, a member of the Executive Committee of Multicare, it was time to talk about the future. “Regarding the future, we see that there are some trends that affect us. The first is longevity and a higher incidence of disease. We all live longer, but we all live more than 10 years without quality of life. The second is new technologies that are more expensive than ever. What was easy to develop is now done. Therefore, in this sense, sustainability also plays a very important role. Finally, customers are changing their expectations. They are much more demanding, they want to be involved, they want to be empowered, they demand more transparency. And that is precisely what we have been trying to do: engage patients in the process of managing their health. We are always looking to the future”, she reinforced.
That said, and just as it happened in the morning, the selected startups in this area exchanged the audience for the stage and the time has come to convince those present, through the Pitch, to move on to the evaluation phase and their respective Meetings 1: 1. .
Talking about trends, talking about innovation, talking about the future
The afternoon ended with another panel, this time focused on trends related to health care. Here, the debate included the views of Francisca CanaiYes Rita Macoranofounders of Nevaro, and richard hyacinth, founder of Shilling. As throughout the day, innovation took center stage and was the central theme of all the reflections. “This is how innovation happens: we bring challenges to companies and companies challenge us too. So together we have the ability to move faster. This is how we move forward, introducing new components, trying to improve what is already being done, with our different technologies”, said the founders of Nevaro. Already richard hyacinth he added, saying that, for him, innovation and its importance are, today, “everywhere. I really believe that there is room for innovation everywhere, in all sectors, in all industries, in all geographies, and I think that this evolution of the market in terms of these large technology companies that have emerged and grown in the decades, it is seen as something differentiating and with a very strong impact on the way businesses, markets and industries evolve. In the Health area this is even more important. We all need to go in the same direction, work towards the same goal and get there as quickly as possible.” For the 3 the conclusion was immediate, now more than ever it is necessary to put the patient at the center of all processes and join efforts so that, with an eye on the future, innovation occurs.
Innovation Matching Day has already taken place, but Protechting 5.0 is still going on until the end of the year. During the next four months, the startups that were selected to pilot with Fidelidade, Fosun or Hospital da Luz Learning Health will be monitored until Demo Day, in November, during which the status of each project will be presented, as well as its impact on business and society.
