Smart Headlights Can Make Driving at Night Easier!

With an estimated 40% of all crashes occurring after dark, it’s no wonder many drivers are concerned about getting into their car at night.

But Ford’s latest innovations may make getting out of the dark a little easier.

The auto giant is testing smart headlights that display directions, speed limits and weather information.

For example, if the road ahead is icy, the vehicle displays a snowflake symbol on the road, while if the speed limit changes, the new limit is highlighted on the ground.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, 40% of crashes occur during the hours of darkness.

In a fact sheet, “the most obvious danger of driving at night is reduced visibility. The distance that the driver can see becomes shorter and therefore hazards often appear suddenly. It also takes time for the eyes to adjust to the dark, after driving. in a lighted building or on a well-lit road.

Hoping to make nighttime driving easier for drivers, Ford is testing new headlight technology.

Lars Juncker, features and software specialist for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ford of Europe, said, “What starts with a projector lamp and a blank wall can bring lighting technologies to a new level. It goes beyond lighting the road to helping reduce the stress of driving at night.

Headlights can display certain road symbols that may be useful to the vehicle driver and other road users; for example, a crosswalk can be displayed on the road for a driver to see or for any pedestrian to see. for safe passage.

The forecast can also indicate a safe path that the driver should follow to ensure that cyclists cross at a safe distance.

Alternatively, the technology can provide the driver with information about the weather through forecast icons that show upcoming fog, snow or ice.

Meanwhile, connecting headlights to a navigation system can indicate upcoming turns, turns or merging traffic.

“The driver can receive important information without taking their eyes off the road,” added Juncker.

It remains unclear when the technology will be ready for implementation or what the cost will be.
