Boston University scientists revealed that directing electrical charges into a person’s brain for 20 minutes led to an improvement in their short-term memory for at least a month.
The journal Nature Neuroscience states that researchers asked 60 people aged 65-88 to participate in this study and divided them into three groups. The first group wore electrode caps but received no electrical stimulation. As for the second group, they received electrical stimulation in the area of the brain responsible for working memory. The third group received electrical stimulation in the area of the brain responsible for long-term memory. During the experiment, neurologists monitored the level of recall of the participants for various words, and after four days it was found that it had improved significantly.
“Unlike drugs and drug preparations that affect brain chemistry, this method affects neurons in the brain. Electrical stimulation seems to stimulate the growth of new neurons in areas important for memory. The human brain has good plasticity, so it can be changed with training,” the researchers wrote. .
