Russian geneticist Jan Dyugev explained the reasons for the birth of seriously ill children to healthy parents.
In an interview with the newspaper “Izvestia”, the scientist said that today’s couples care about the health of the children they plan to have. That is why they undergo a medical examination to improve their overall health and reproductive health. But even healthy couples may be unaware of DNA abnormalities that affect the outcome of the pregnancy and the health of the unborn child. That is why it is important to examine genes before conception and explain why babies with serious diseases can be born from healthy parents.
According to him, the first reason may be that both couples have the same genetic mutation. With a 25 percent chance of a child developing a gene disorder such as early-onset cystic fibrosis, phenylketonuria and Rett syndrome, it is difficult and requires significant financial costs.
“These diseases are relatively rare and do not threaten more than 2% of newborns. However, the birth of a child with a serious illness is a tragedy for the family. Therefore, this risk can be reduced through genetic testing. a number of monogenetic diseases. Both mutations are identical. If it is found that she is carrying a baby, they can have IVF.”
The second reason is that couples may not be aware of the presence of abnormalities in their personal chromosomes, since the formula is 46 ХХ Y in women and 46 Х Y in men. Abnormalities may never occur, so they can lead to infertility or fetal death in the first trimester of pregnancy.
The specialist recommends that the couple undergo genetic testing to ensure that they do not have any abnormalities in their individual chromosomes and that they do not carry the same genetic mutation so that they can have healthy children.
