One proud owner of an electric vehicle (EV) has discovered that a new battery for his 2012 Chevrolet Volt costs around $30,000 – more than his car is worth. The high cost of battery replacement, in addition to limited range and deadly battery fires, is another issue consumers should consider.
A photo of the estimate is circulating on social media showing the new battery will cost $26,853.99 and other costs bringing the total bill to $29,842.15.

The Volt is a hybrid vehicle created when Chevy began to enter the electric vehicle market. It has since been replaced by a car called the Bolt. western magazine.
According to Chevrolet’s website, the Bolt currently starts at $25,000. Meanwhile, automotive website Edmunds says the 2012 Volt is priced between $7,999 and $17,590 today.
Roger Dean Chevrolet of Cape Coral, Florida, who drafted the stunning forecast, admitted in a Facebook post that he offered to replace the battery for more than the car is worth.
“This estimate is for a 12-year-old car that is out of warranty, and a battery that is very difficult to obtain due to the older technology of the 12-year-old car,” the dealership said.
Roger Dean Chevrolet then used the situation as an opportunity to introduce new electric vehicles.
“The dealer does not set the price of the batteries. Batteries are cheaper in newer EV or EUV vehicles with newer technology,” he continued.
“Think of it like big-screen TVs. Remember, they were very expensive when the first big screens came out, and prices are rising as technology advances. This battery is also not covered by the 8-year/100,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first.”
By contrast, replacing a gasoline engine in a car costs between $4,000 and $10,000, according to a report by Consumer Affairs in April.
