The car market in Portugal fell by 2.8% between January and August, compared to the same period in 2021, with 120,093 new vehicles in circulation, according to data from ACAP — Associação Automóvel de Portugal published today.
“From January to August 2022, 120,093 new vehicles were put into circulation, which represented a decrease of 2.8% compared to the same period in 2021,” says ACAP.
Only the data for the month of August shows that a total of 13,214 vehicles were registered in that month by the legal representatives of the brands that operate in Portugal, which represents an increase of 32.1% compared to the same month in 2021.
In the comparison with the first eight months of 2019 and with August 2019, the market registered falls of 36.3% and 17.6%, respectively.
In the analysis of vehicle categories, data released today by ACAP reveals that in August 2022, 11,349 new passenger cars were registered in Portugal, reflecting an increase of 42.4% compared to the same month in 2021.
“Compared to August 2019, the market registered a drop of 8.7%,” highlights ACAP.
In the eight months of 2022, the registrations of light passenger vehicles totaled 101,293 units, “which translated into a negative variation of 0.4% compared to the same period of 2021”, and in the comparison with the eight months of the year 2019, “the market registered a decrease of 36.5%.
The same information also details that 9.9% of new light passenger cars registered are electric.
“From January to August 2022, 38.4% of newly registered light passenger vehicles were powered by other types of energy, namely electric and hybrid,” says the ACAP statement, detailing that “the 9.9% of new light passenger vehicles were electric.
As for light vehicles, the market registered a negative evolution in August, falling 20.2% compared to the same month of 2021, reaching 1,450 registered units.
In accumulated terms, in the eight months since 2022, this market segment reached 15,054 units, 19.7% less than in the same period of 2021.
In the heavy vehicle segment (which includes passenger and freight types), the data indicates that there was a year-on-year increase of 93.0%, with 415 vehicles in this category having been sold.
ACAP also details that from January to August 2022, registrations in this category totaled 3,746 units, which represented a market increase of 22.5% compared to January to August 2021.
