Santo Tirso destroyed this year 284 nests of Asian wasps

The City Council of Santo Tirso destroyed this year and until August 31, 284 velutina wasp nests, having announced this Thursday an investment of five thousand euros in the acquisition of equipment for a “faster combat”.

As a result of the investment made, added a source from the municipality, “from now on the elimination of nests will be done by applying a non-repellent chemical through the use of an extendable carbon fiber rod, up to 22 meters, or a compressed air marker ”, the two “tools” acquired by the Porto district municipality.

In the statement, the municipality clarifies that, “after application, the wasp nest becomes dormant after four to five days“.

Quoted by the press release, the mayor, Alberto Costa, explained that the new equipment “allows a more effective combat, to the extent that it allows the removal of nests that cannot be burned.”

“In addition to preventing the wasps from escaping during the intervention, they also reduce the risk for the teams carrying out their removal,” explains Alberto Costa.

The new system “also dispenses with means of elevation, felling of trees and means of prevention during the burning process that could only take place at night,” continues the press release.

In 2020, the camera destroyed 416 nestsand the following year it killed 820 nests.

The municipality points out that the velutina, or Asian wasp, “has yellow legs and a dark body, with an orange segment on the abdomen and is larger than the European wasp” and that, “in addition to reaching local species, it reacts in a quite aggressive to threats to its nest, be able to perform group chases for about 500 meters“.

In case of suspected sighting of an Asian hornet nest, the municipality asks citizens to contact the Municipal Civil Protection Service, by calling 252 830 484 or by sending an email to [email protected].
