The GNR seized, on Thursday, in Porto, more than 2,000 packages of medicines and veterinary products for prohibited use in 30 pharmacies, agricultural cooperatives, veterinary clinics and pet Shop (pet stores), this police force announced this Friday.
Within the scope of this inspection operation in establishments that sell or possess veterinary medicines and products for veterinary use, in order to control and repress possible irregularities in the legislation on the matter, the GNR prepared 41 files of administrative infractionshe said in a statement.
Of these 41 infractions, 12 were due to lack of authorization from the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) for the sale of veterinary drugs subject to medical prescription and two for the sale of expired veterinary drugs.
In addition to these, 22 of them were due to the sale of veterinary products not authorized by the DGAV and another two due to lack of a license from the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) for the sale of protected birds.
The operation, called “Jupiter”, had the support of the Directorate of Food and Veterinary Services of the North Region and the Central Services of the DGAV and the municipal veterinarians of the municipalities of Amarante, Felgueiras, Paredes, Matosinhos, Vila do Conde , Santo Tirso and Gondomar, in the Porto district.
The guard warns that veterinary medicines and products for veterinary use are crucial resources for the defense of the health and welfare of animals and for the protection of public health, as well as being an instrument to safeguard animal production, with an impact considerable in the economy of agricultural and food exploitations”, he warned.
