Queen’s University Belfast scientists have created a plastic membrane that kills viruses.
Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology shows that a team of university scientists has created a membrane that can kill viruses that fall on its surface under room lighting conditions.
According to the creators, this membrane is characterized by the possibility of self-sterilization through a thin layer of particles that absorb ultraviolet rays and produce active oxygen species that kill viruses, including emerging that coronavirus.
The researchers tested this membrane on two strains of the influenza A virus, Picornaviridae and coronavirus. The film showed its effectiveness not only under the influence of ultraviolet rays, but also in normal room lighting conditions. In addition, the new film is more environmentally friendly, unlike plastic disposable tapes. Therefore, its innovators recommend using it in medical institutions, public places, as well as in food production.
