Report: Teens hacked Uber, employees thought it was a joke

Ride-sharing giant Uber said it was investigating a “cybersecurity incident” after a hacker who claimed to be 18 years old claimed he had administrative access to the company’s vehicles.

The Verge reports that Uber claims to be investigating a “cybersecurity incident” following reports of breaches of the company’s internal systems. The alleged hacker claims to be 18 years old and has access to company tools, including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform. An Uber spokesperson said the company declined to answer additional questions, citing a public statement on Twitter: “We are currently responding to a cybersecurity incident. We are in contact with law enforcement and will post additional updates here as they become available.”

Colton Seal, CEO and co-founder of Routefusion, tweeted a screenshot of an internal Uber Slack chat where the hacker appeared among employees.

Many employees were reportedly shocked by the hacker’s message that they thought it was just a joke. Employees’ responses ranged from nonchalant emojis to “happening” GIFs. An unnamed employee said staff thought it was a joke and contacted the hacker.
