An earthquake of magnitude greater than 4 on the Richter scale was recorded this Monday afternoon near the Algarve.
According to information released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 4:30 p.m. and had its epicenter in the sea, 205 kilometers from Sagres, at a depth of ten kilometers.
The USGS values, which registered a magnitude of 4.5, are slightly different from those of the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), according to which the earthquake had a magnitude of less than 4.2, and occurred 26 kilometers deep. .
The earthquake was followed by an aftershock of 2.8, at 5:00 p.m., according to the same agency.
The earthquake occurred on the Bank of Gorringe, the region with the highest seismic activity in the country and the location of the strongest earthquakes felt in Portugal, namely the 1755 earthquake.
