Hurricane Fiona, which made landfall on Monday morning in the Dominican Republic, left more than a million people without running water, Dominican emergency services reported.
In addition to damaging 59 aqueducts and disrupting water supplies, the storm has so far damaged 54 homes and prompted the evacuation of 789 people. Ten electrical circuits stopped working, said the director of the emergency operations center, Juan Manuel Méndez, quoted by CNN.
Fiona reached the Dominican Republic at 9 in the morning and has since been classified as a category 2 hurricane, after winds of 160 kilometers per hour were recorded. According to CNN, the storm is about 210 kilometers from Grand Turk, where it is headed. The hurricane is expected to pass near the Turks and Caicos Islands early Tuesday.
In Puerto Rico, the deceleration of the winds caused the tropical storm warning to be lifted.
Fiona’s passage through the Caribbean island on Sunday caused significant damage to infrastructure, landslides, falling trees and left the entire territory (a total of 3.3 million people) without electricity. Authorities anticipate that it will be several days before the network is fully restored. More than a thousand people had to be rescued.
