Young activists returned to the global strike to demand climate action from governments

Young activists staged a coordinated “global climate strike” on Friday to raise awareness of their fears about the effects of global warming and demand more support from poor countries hit by bad weather.

In cities like Jakarta, Tokyo, Berlin and Lisbon, protesters took to the streets with signs and banners bearing slogans such as “We care about the climate crisis” and “It’s not too late”.

The demonstrations were organized by the “Fridays for Future” youth movement, created at the initiative of activist Greta Thunberg, who began protesting alone in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018.

“We are on strike around the world because the governments in power continue to do too little for climate justice”said Darya Sotoodeh, one of the group’s spokespersons in Germany.

“People all over the world are suffering from this crisis and it will get worse if we don’t act in time,” he said.

Thousands of people gathered in Berlin to call on the German government to set up a €100 billion fund to fight climate change.

As part of this initiative, which ends up bringing together other citizens, young people skip class on Fridays to demonstrate.
