This Wednesday, the Brazilian government celebrated the reduction in deforestation in the Amazon and stated that the good results mean that the “complicity of government officials with criminals” has ended.
The government “has has given a strong signal that there is no longer any expectation of impunitydue to the connivance and complicity of governments with criminals,” said the Minister of the Environment of Brazil, Marina Silva, at a press conference to present the consolidated results on deforestation in the Amazon between August 2022 and July 2023, annual period in accordance with the rainfall regime in the biome.
According to new data, captured with the Prodes satellite system, the forest lost 9,064 square kilometers of vegetation that year, 21.8% less than the previous year and the lowest devastation rate in the last five years.
According to the Brazilian minister, the results presented this Wednesday are the effect of the measures taken by Lula da Silva’s government to preserve the Amazon, in a “combination of instruments, inspection actions,” among other measures.
During the presentation of the report, Marina Silva highlighted that, if there is adequate planning, the devastation of the largest tropical forest on the planet can be combated.
