UN team ready to help Brazil due to heavy rains in the south

The UN team in Brazil “is ready to help” the population affected by strong floods and floods in the country, announced this fourth fair by António Guterres’ spokesperson, highlighting that the general secretary is “deeply saddened” by the situation.

“The UN Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the heavy rains and flooding in southern Brazil,” said a statement released by Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, in which extends its condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of Brazil, as well as the families of the victims.

“The United Nations team on the ground is ready to help the people of Brazil at this difficult time,” he added.

The Secretary General of the United Nations, who has environmental issues as one of the priorities of his mandate, took the opportunity to point out that disasters like this “are a reminder of the devastating effects of the climate crisis lives and livelihoods.

Guterres reiterated his call for rapid international action to contain the “chaotic effects of climate change.”

The number of people killed by the floods that hit southern Brazil increased from 96 to 101, according to a new report released this Wednesday by local authorities.

Almost all of the deaths occurred in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which to date has 100 confirmed deaths, according to the local Civil Defense. The state of Santa Catarina recorded one death.

Experts warned of the risk of new problems emerging as Weather conditions in the region could worsen due to a cold front that reaches the southern region of the state and that will cause rain and a drop in temperature this week, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

With 11 million inhabitants, Rio Grande do Sul has been greatly affected by climate change. After suffering problems with a severe drought due to the La Niña phenomenon, last year the region began to be affected by El Niño and recorded, in less than 12 months, four climate disasters caused by cyclones and extratropical storms.

In 2023, three events occurred in June, September and November, which caused 75 deaths in this Brazilian state.
