Civil Protection of the Azores advised the population to take “self-protection measures” in the face of the approach of the storm “Gastón” and the expected worsening of the weather, especially in the Central Group, as of Friday night.

In a statement, the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA) recommends that people only circulate “in case of need”, “housing animals”, away from “low areas near the seafront” and “not practicing activities related to the sea. ”.

Vessels must strengthen their moorings or move to safe places.

On the other hand, Civil Protection recommends that the drainage systems be kept clean, “loose objects from the garden and the bin, or others that the wind can throw” be kept, also asking for the consolidation of roofs, doors and windows and “close good doors, windows and shutters”.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) issued this Friday a red alert for the islands of Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira (Central Group of the Azores) due to the forecast of heavy rainfall for the place.
