Climate change has hit hard the Alps, which have a record melting ice. This time it was in Switzerland where the melting showed a plane that has been missing for decades, bodies of people and a rock that was buried millions of years ago.
GLAMOS —the Swiss network in charge of analyzing the behavior of glaciers— reveals that by 2022 6% of the remaining ice in Europe’s largest mountain range will have already melted, being very close to reaching half the value recorded in 2003. Reuters says the loss of about 3 cubic kilometers of ice this year is due to lack of snow during the winter and in constant high temperatures that were felt during the summer.
The scenario is not favorable and it is expected that even more amounts of water will be lost in the future. More than half of the glaciers in the Alps are in Switzerland, where temperatures are rising rapidly and twice as high as expected.
“With the climate scenarios we already knew that this situation would occur in the future. Realizing that the future is here and now is perhaps the most surprising and impactful experience of this summer”, says Matthias Huss, director of GLAMOS.
