September was the fourth hottest month on record, reveals IPMA

Last September was the fourth hottest month on record in the world, with temperatures in Greenland exceeding 8°C (8°C) above the monthly average.

According to the Climatological Bulletin for September 2022, published this Friday by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), Greenland recorded the highest temperatures in history for the month of September in some places.

In Portugal, the month was classified as hot and rainy. The mean value of the mean temperature was higher than the normal value (0.42 °C), and the mean value of the minimum air temperature, 14.94 °C, was also higher than normal (+0.78 °C). ), being the fifth highest value since 2000. The mean value of the maximum temperature was close to the mean.

As for rainfall, the IPMA says the month was the fourth wettest since 2000.with total precipitation, 66.5 mm, corresponding to about 158% of the normal value.

The IPMA highlights the rain between days 12 and 15, corresponding to the average value of precipitation in these four days to 77% of the total value of the month.. On these days, in some places inside the center, the values of accumulated precipitation exceeded two to three times the average value for the month.

For this reason, at the end of September, the climatic drought situation had subsided throughout the country. At the end of September, 3.3% of the continent was in mild drought, 64.3% in moderate drought, 32.2% in severe drought and 0.2% in extreme drought.

In Europe, the temperature was 0.4 °C lower than the average value from 1991-2020, mainly due to below-average temperatures in a region that stretches from central Europe to Finland and Russia. But in Western Europe temperatures were above average.

More than normal rainfall and flooding occurred in many regions, but above-normal drought conditions persisted in many parts of southern Europe, including the north of the Iberian Peninsula, western France, and regions to the west and east. of the Black Sea, also indicates the IPMA.
