An agreement to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 in global civil aviation was announced this Friday by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

Representatives of the 193 member states of the UN reached “an historic agreement on an ambitious collective long-term goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050”ICAO announced on the social network Twitter.

“It is an excellent result,” a European diplomatic source told AFP, specifying that “only four countries, including China, have expressed reservations.”

Air transport has been singled out for its role in the climate crisis.

Responsible for 2.5 to 3% of global CO2 emissions, the sector has struggled to switch to renewable energy.although the aeronautical industry and energy companies are working hard to achieve it.

After the agreement was announced, Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) welcomed the commitment and requested that guidelines be sent to States to implement the agreement.

ICAO’s global commitment (…) is an important milestone for the industry and for the climate. The ambition of the industry is now finally being fulfilled on a political and global level. We now urgently need ICAO to work on concrete implementation policies and actions, guiding States around the world towards delivery and supporting industry in the transition,” said ICAO Europe Director General Olivier Jankovec. cited in a statement.
