Sergei Mukhametov, Senior Lecturer at the Oceanography Department of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow University, announced that fighting dolphins were able to protect Sevastopol Bay from sabotage divers.
In an interview with the Russian RIA Novosti news agency, the expert said that the writer Blake Stilwell published an article in the American magazine 19Fortyfive, noting that Russia could use war dolphins to fight saboteurs of Ukrainian on the Black Sea.
“Fighting dolphins really helps in the fight against sabotage,” he said. “They can protect the entrance to Sevastopol Bay.”
According to him, these dolphins have been used to search for saboteurs in the Soviet Union and the United States since the late 1960s. And the main Soviet center appeared in Sevastopol Bay, where some dolphins were trained to look for underwater saboteurs, and others to look for underwater mines.
He said: “After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Black Sea Fleet was split between Russia and Ukraine. According to the division, dolphins are part of Ukraine, which hardly paid attention to them at the required level. After returning to Russia in 2014 in Crimea and Sevastopol’ He returned with the Yunus Training and Preparation Center and continued his active education.”
Makhamitov claims that only large dolphins, reaching a length of 3.5 m and weighing almost 300 kg, are capable of resisting sabotage operations. But he also noted that these dolphins are unlikely to be used to blow up enemy ships.
“There is no reason to use dolphins in this process. Because it takes two years to prepare the dolphins. True, dolphins are smart and pets, but why do you need to train them for so long? Blast them?! Additionally, the Dolphin can be loaded with 10 kg of explosives.”
