3,000 articles from the Institute of International Studies available online

Nearly 3,000 articles from the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI) collection, previously virtually inaccessible, are now available. onlinethanks to an initiative of the National Center of Culture to make intellectual heritage available to researchers.

The founder and former director of the IEEI, Álvaro Vasconcelos, told Lusa that the IEEI’s documentary collection includes articles by some of the most important Portuguese researchers, politicians and diplomats, who play an important role in the study of international relations.

Vasconcelos points out that “the news of the Iraq War and the European positions on the war and the criticism of the US intervention in the war had a strong presence in the work of the IEEI”.

The platform has several texts about the war in Iraq, as well as against the war in Russia —given that it is the violation of state sovereignty and total disrespect for the electoral order— or the [ex presidente norte-americano George W.] Bush wants from [presidente russo Vladimir] Putin”, emphasizes Vasconcelos

Documents related to the war in Ukraine are available, Vasconcelos says, as well as various texts on the post-Cold War international order.

Founded in 1980 and active until 2012, the IEEI produced studies, analyzes and books on topics such as international political systems, Portugal’s insertion in the European Union or the Cold War.

In particular, Vasconcelos recommends a text by former president Jorge Sampaio, which explains the importance of defending the international orderresulting from a participation in the IEEI conference, in which he clearly opposed the war.

Nearly three thousand texts have already been recovered and published, by various national and international authors, including Eduardo Lourenço, philosopher and winner of the Camões Prize in 1996.

The IEEI was responsible for organizing the Lisbon International Conferences for several years, which hosted discussions on international foreign policy issues.

The collection, says Vasconcelos, will have a content that addresses “the problems of European integration, from before Portugal’s action to the different crises, all in relation to the attempts to build a European political union, both from the point of view of foreign, democratic and security policy”.

On the eve of the second round of elections in Brazil, the IEEI Documentation Center is already highlighting texts on relations between Europe and Brazil and the relationship between Europe and Mercosur.

The project to revitalize the disappeared collection had the support of the Ministry of Defense in collecting the material.
