A strong earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale off Crete forced tsunami warnings to be issued for some areas of the island, such as Irakleion and Sitia. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 63 km, in the Cretan Sea, and no material damage or fatalities are yet known.

“Move away from the coast and go to higher places. Follow the instructions of the national authorities”, was the warning given in Crete, after the earthquake, which should have arrived around 1:25 in the morning, one hour more than in Portugal. The authorities also asked neighboring countries to consult their information sites, in the Portuguese case the IPMA.

Several aftershocks were felt after the main earthquake, putting the population on alert during the early hours of the morning.
