Nothing better than the moose test, invented by the Nordics, to determine the ability of drivers to avoid an unexpected obstacle that appears ahead, and then return to their lane without losing control of the vehicle during this emergency maneuver. And since the KM77 puts every new vehicle on the market to the test, this time it was the turn of the new BMW X1 to show what it is capable of, facing the moose, but also a slalom race.
The unit that was the object of the evasion maneuver was the X1 sDrive 18d, with front-wheel drive and a 150 hp 2.0 turbodiesel engine. In the moose test, the BMW X1 tried to attack the “double S” at various speeds, but the maximum he achieved to carry out the maneuver without knocking down pins was 74 km/h. An acceptable value for an SUV with these characteristics, but it is not the best in its class.
The BMW X1 starts losing to its “big brother”, the X3, which carried out the maneuver at 81 km/h. But the smallest SUV of the German brand is also surpassed by the Maxda CX-5 (81 km/h), Renault Kadjar (81), Opel Grandland X (81), Citroën C5 Aircross (79), Renault Arkana (77) and Nissan Qashqai (75).
In the slalom race, the X1 completes the course in 25.5 seconds, proving to be safe but not among the most agile. In a Germany/Italy confrontation, the BMW X1 is surpassed, albeit slightly, by the also new Alfa Romeo Tonale, which meets the moose test at the same speed (74 km/h), but is faster in slalom (24.5 seconds).
