Tesla confirms development of a new platform that is 50% cheaper

It is known, through statements by the former CEO of the Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess, that Tesla in Berlin produces a car three times faster than VW in Wolfsburg, in a difference of 10 to 30 hours. This is not due to the lack of skill or technique of the German workers, but rather because the entire platform of the German-produced Model Y is made from just three parts, forged on the gigantic Gigapress created by the Italians at IDRA. Hence the importance of the confirmation of Elon Musk, during the announcement of the financial results of the 4th quarter of last year, that Tesla is developing a platform that is 50% cheaper to produce.

It is not the first time that Musk, the CEO of the North American brand of electric vehicles, refers to the new platform, which could start servicing the Model 2 – if that is what the ID-sized model will be called. .3-, but that he will later see his technology extended to the entire range. The strategy is to be able to produce a platform with a single part, instead of the three that are now needed for a Model Y or a Model 3.

Tesla Gigapress in Berlin

To get an idea of the advantages of these parts that are forged in the Gigapress presses, it is enough to remember that the company admitted that, in the Model Y, the entire front (from the bumper to the A-pillar and the package batteries) is now manufactured with just a punch from IDRA machines. This is a notable evolution compared to what happened until then, in which an average of 70 molded parts were needed, which implies a much higher workload than conventional presses, and then these smaller parts still have to be welded together. yes to form the front of the model.

It may be thanks to this architecture manufactured with a single hit of Gigapress -which for that will have to be even bigger and capable of generating higher pressures, to accept the production of larger parts- that Tesla is thinking of reducing by 50 % the cost of the platform. Everything indicates that the new base, designed to be cheaper, is being developed in China, as the photo seems to confirm. We can only wait for a clarification of this early news at the shareholders’ meeting, which should only take place on March 1, on the next Tesla Investor Day.
