The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) will have ten districts in mainland Portugal under yellow alert until Wednesday March 1, due to cold weather. The country will be hit by a cold air mass, coming from the Arctic, which will make the nights freezing, especially in the interior districts.
According to IPMA forecasts, the lowest temperatures are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
This Sunday there are already seven districts with a yellow warning due to the cold -Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda, Viseu, Aveiro, Castelo Branco and Portalegre- and the scenario will be similar on Monday, February 27. Starting Tuesday, these districts will join Santarém, Évora and Beja, bringing the total number of districts under yellow warning to ten. These ten districts will remain under yellow alert until Wednesday.
A statement from the IPMA explains that this cold warning is due to the mass “transported in the joint circulation of an anticyclone located to the west of the British Isles and a depression centered on the Iberian Peninsula”, which will condition the meteorology in continental Portugal . until early March.
In a few hours the continental polar air mass ????️ will erupt, quite powerful for the closure. The isotherm of -10 ºC (at about 1500 meters) will reach the north of the peninsula.
The first half of this next week will be very cold ????.

It is explained that “the highest values of the maximum temperature will remain below 16°C, being below 10°C in the interior of the North and Central regions.” and stands out “acute refrigeration during the night”, which will take “the minimum temperature to values below 5°C in most of the territory, being below 0°C in the interior North and Center”. The IPMA foresees that there are conditions for the formation of ice or frost, especially in the interior North and Center of the country.
This cold air mass will come from the northeast side, that is, from the side of the European continent. Since it will arrive in Spain first, AEMET, the Spanish weather monitoring institute, has also issued a warning that the cold nights will affect the Iberian Peninsula for the next few days.
Given the movement of the cold from the continental side, the temperature changes will affect the inland districts more. In Braganza, which is already under a yellow warning this Sunday, the minimum temperature will drop to -5ºC on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday night, the IPMA estimates that the temperature at 23 hours, estimated at -1ºC, can be felt at -3ºC.
In Évora, where only a yellow warning is expected from Tuesday, a minimum of 1º C and a maximum of 13º are expected for that day. On Wednesday, this district remains with a yellow warning and a minimum negative is expected (-1º). Also in this case, the lowest temperatures are seen in the early hours of Tuesday. On Wednesday, the minimum is below 0ºC.
