The fight to end fossil fuels brought together this Wednesday a small group of students in front of a secondary school in Faro, who will promote actions to mobilize the community for two weeks, one of those responsible told Lusa.
During the morning, the group was at the entrance of the Tomás Cabreira Secondary School in an awareness-raising action with the students, in which they distributed brochures and placed posters on a table that read “Occupy until you change”, “End the Fossil” or “Green Future”. .
According to Mourana Monteiro, an activist of the “End of the Fossil: Occupy!” movement, the planned actions, including debates, conferences and open rounds, in which anyone can participate, culminate, on May 8, with the occupation of the Tomás Escuela Cabreira and the University of the Algarve (UALg).
“Today is the launch event, in which we want to tell the people, the communities, that we cannot continue as normal and that we have to interruption to end destruction [do planeta]said Lusa, a master’s student in Cognitive Neurosciences and Neuropsychology.
The activist said that the group was prevented from placing posters and promoting actions inside the establishments, so they decided to appeal to the mobilization of students outside the school, providing a QR code with a form for those who want to register to participate in a preparatory meeting.
According to Teresa Núncio, spokesperson for the occupations for the end of fossils in Portugal, the occupation of schools and universities will continue until 1,500 people from civil society join the students for a protest on May 13 in the port of Sines, “the largest entrance of fossil gas in the country”.
Young people call for an end to fossil fuels by 2030 and “100% renewable and affordable electricity for all families by 2025”.
