The Regional Secretary of Agriculture and Food of the Azores hosted this Wednesday the The region continues to be a zone free of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. (DHE), as a result of the work developed between the Executive and the Agricultural Federation.
The General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine published a notice, which has been in force since April 27, in which the areas affected by DUS are determined and that “demarcates the Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira as DUS-free zones”according to a note released this Wednesday by the Regional Government of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM).
The DHE-free zone status “results from a Joint work between the Regional Government and the Agricultural Federation of the Azores, [que] “They quickly established measures that prevented the disease from spreading in the Autonomous Region of the Azores,” said the head of Agriculture and Food, António Ventura.
“As with other various diseases, this is more than just a designation, it is a testimony of our commitment to the highest health standards and practicesinstitutional cooperation and dedication of all,” added António Ventura, quoted in the statement.
António Ventura also assured that “is committed to innovation, research and constant adaptation to epidemiological changes They are essential to maintain and raise the standards” that distinguish the Azores.
“In this sense, we reaffirm our commitment to national and community cooperation and the exchange of knowledge, recognizing that health challenges do not respect borders,” he added.
DHE is a disease of viral etiology that affects ruminants, especially cattle and wild deer, with transmission by vectors (mosquitoes), which is included in the list of notifiable diseases of the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA), reminds the Government of the Azores.
“Entomological surveillance plans started in 2024 in Departments of Food and Veterinary Services of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (DSAVRLVT) and the Alentejo (DSAVRAL) allowed the establishment of a vector-free period. However, the evolution of temperatures to higher values and the results of the entomological plan indicate the end of the season free of vector insects,” the note reads.
