The automotive market grows by 7.8% in the first half of the year, reveals the Portuguese Automobile Association

The Portuguese car market grew by 7.8% in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period last year, ACAP (Associação Automóvel de Portugal) announced on Monday.

“From January to June 2024, 137,195 new vehicles were put into circulation, which represented an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period of the previous year,” ACAP said in a statement.

All vehicle categories recorded an increase in the number of registrations in the first six months of the year:Passenger vehicles grew by 5.7%, light vehicles by 22.9% and heavy vehicles by 14.7%.

The data also show that in the first half of the year, “51.7% of new passenger cars registered were powered by other types of energy, specifically electric and hybrid“, with 16.5% of new passenger cars being electric.

On the other hand, analyzing the monthly data, it can be seen that in June “24,561 motor vehicles were registered in Portugal, that is, 4.7% less than in the same month of 2023“, although this year there were two fewer working days than in 2023.

While the number of new passenger cars registered in June fell by 8.4% compared to the same period last year, The light goods market grew by 10.1% and heavy vehicles (passenger cars and goods) increased by 56.4%.

ACAP also indicates that, in the sixth month of the year, the weight of trams represented 18.9% of the market.
