Operations of the Coastal Control Unit of the GNR, with the mission of controlling cross-border crime, pollution and illegal fishingdetected and rescued a turtle trapped in a fishing net off Mojácar, Spain, it was announced Tuesday.
According to a note from the GNR, members of the Coast and Border Control Unit (UCCF), aboard the coastal patrol boat “Bojador”, sighted a loggerhead turtle (Caretta Caretta) on Monday about 10 nautical miles (about 18 kilometers) off the town of Mojácar.
The soldiers picked up the turtle, which was entangled in the nets and had difficulty moving.to monitor their health status, release the fishing gear and remaining plastic material and subsequently release them into their natural habitat.
The GNR highlights that fishing material abandoned at sea is a very significant part of plastic waste in the sea, “it is estimated that it kills a high number of marine species such as whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and turtles every year.”
The GNR, through the UCCF, is participating with the ship “Bojador” in the operation “INDALO 2024”, which began on June 12 and ends on Wednesday, under the auspices of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX), in the field of operational coordination at the external borders of the European Union.
The main objective of this agency is to act in border surveillance, control irregular immigration flows, combat cross-border crime, strengthen European cooperation at the level of the Coast Guard and support search and rescue operations.
