The Gaia Hospital inaugurates a Neurocritical Unit for 4 million euros

The Local Health Unit of Gaia e Espinho (ULSGE) inaugurates this Friday the Neurocritical Care Unit, with 12 places, a four million euro project that raises the number of Intensive Medicine beds to 40.

This new unit is part of the Intensive and Multipurpose Medicine Service (SMIP) of the ULSGE, where around half a thousand neurocritical patients receive care annually.

“There is a specialized Neurocritical Care Unit essential to offer the highest level of care to patients with serious neurological pathologyincreasing not only the chances of survival, but also their potential for functional recovery,” indicates the director of the SMIP, Igor Milet, quoted in a statement.

The new unit has 12 beds, bringing the number of Intensive Medicine beds at ULSGE to 40.

According to the ULSGE, the investment in equipment for this type of care is close to 1.8 million euros.

“The investment line for the best response to patients with serious neurological pathology also included the reinforcement of human resources“added the ULSGE, without detailing the type and number of professionals.

The objective of this unit is that, with the support of biotechnology, a more precise diagnosis and more efficient intervention is possible in complex situations, considered crucial to avoid permanent neurological damage, and thus improve the prognosis of this group of patients.

Also cited in the ULSGE statement, the clinical director of the ULSGE, Diana Mota, who is also an intensivist, highlights that “the prevalence of acute neurological injuries that are disabling and/or life-threatening immediately or in the very short term is a problem of Western society, whether due to the prevalence of cerebrovascular diseases or the prevalence of traumatic injuries.”

For the clinical director, Another aspect to be assessed will be in the context of “complex decisions in the field of ethics.”“which must involve experienced, trained and well-coordinated teams so that they result in greater benefit for the patient.”

The inauguration of the new Neurocritical Care Unit is scheduled for this Friday, at 9:30 a.m., with the presidents of the municipalities of Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto district) and Espinho (Aveiro district).
