The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said this Thursday that a proposal will soon be presented to improve the system for returning illegal immigrants to their countries of origin.
“We will soon present a new proposal for the return” of migrants who are ordered to leave a Member State, within the scope of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, said von der Leyen, at the final press conference of the European Council.
Asked about the protection of asylum seekersThe head of the community executive stated that this can also be guaranteed in third countries, where immigration control posts are installed, in response to the migration crisis that Italy is testing in Albania.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, for his part, considered that the debate on migration at the meeting of EU leaders was “very profound”having reached a compromise on more returns – only 20% of migrants ordered to leave a Member State actually leave the European Union (EU) – and the “firm fight against illegal immigration”.
