Von der Leyen presents “soon” a proposal to accelerate the returns of migrants

“We will soon present a new proposal for the return” of the immigrants, von der Leyen announced. The protection of asylum seekers can be guaranteed in third countries.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said this Thursday that a proposal will soon be presented to improve the system for returning illegal immigrants to their countries of origin.

“We will soon present a new proposal for the return” of migrants who are ordered to leave a Member State, within the scope of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, said von der Leyen, at the final press conference of the European Council.

Asked about the protection of asylum seekersThe head of the community executive stated that this can also be guaranteed in third countries, where immigration control posts are installed, in response to the migration crisis that Italy is testing in Albania.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, for his part, considered that the debate on migration at the meeting of EU leaders was “very profound”having reached a compromise on more returns – only 20% of migrants ordered to leave a Member State actually leave the European Union (EU) – and the “firm fight against illegal immigration”.

Michel also highlighted the case of Poland, which faces problems on the border with Belarus, which uses immigrants as a hybrid weapon.

This Thursday, the 27 Member States declared themselves in favor of a new “urgent” immigration law to “accelerate” the expulsion of illegal immigrants, in the text of the summit conclusions.

This is a delicate debate in the EU given the different points of view and contexts of the Member States in the management of migration, which will serve to analyze how to combat illegal immigration, reinforce the returns of people in this situation and improve the routes of legal integration.
