Storm Kirk felled more than 130 trees in Braga, 90 percent were meliadas

The Councilor for Civil Protection of the Braga City Council, Altino Bessa, stated this Wednesday that storm Kirk felled more than 130 trees in the municipality, 90 percent of which were meliaceae.

Responding to a question from the CDU councilor, Altino Bessa stated that for each tree cut down another will be planted, but of different species, essentially native.

“The Mellies are out of the question,” he said.

According to Altino Bessa, the municipality registered, on September 8, “Truly anomalous” winds, with gusts of 108 kilometers per hour.

The councilor said that 90 percent of the “victims” were of the melia species.

“Maybe they shouldn’t have been planted,” he admitted.

CDU councilor Vítor Rodrigues questioned whether there is any reforestation project to replace the felled trees.

“Where one fell, we will plant one,” responded the head of Civil Protection.
