People fleeing after attack in Mocimboa da Praia

The rebels attacked the community of Awase, in Mocimboa da Praia, but the quick intervention of the Defense forces prevented fatalities. The climate of tension in Mozambique has increased in recent days.

An armed group attacked the town of Awasse, an administrative post of Diaca, in the district of Mocimboa da Praia, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, on Wednesday night, local sources told Lusa.

The rebel attack began around 8:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. in Lisbon), causing the residents to flee.

“Awasse is being attacked, everyone fled, it’s sad.“said a forest source.

The sources reported that it is not known with certainty from which side the rebels came, adding that indiscriminate gunshots were heard, taking the community and the Defense and Security Forces by surprise.

“We only heard gunshots everywhere, no one imagined or expected it, everything happened quickly“, also said, requesting anonymity, a source on the run.

There are no reports of fatalities, but the rebel invasion was responded to by the Mozambique Defense and Security Forces, stationed at the junction between the districts of Mocimboa da Praia and Mueda, further north of Cabo Delgado, the sources said.

“I don’t know if there are any dead, but I managed to escape with my entire family,” lamented another source.

This is not the first time that insurgents have attacked the community of Awasse, in the district of Mocimboa da Praia, located next to the EN380 national highway, almost 300 kilometers from the city of Pemba.
