The Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) this Saturday recommended to the population a series of precautions to take in the face of the adverse weather forecasts expected for the region starting Sunday morning.
In a statement, Civil Protection specifies that, from early Sunday morning, associated with the approach and passage of a frontal surface, “periods of rain or showers are expected, which may be temporarily more intense on the south coast and in the mountainous areas.” , especially between 06:00 and 12:00, when these areas will be under orange notice.
The SRPC adds that during this period “the wind, from the southwest, can be moderate to strong with gusts of around 70 km/h.”
For this reason, the Regional Civil Protection Service recommends avoiding trips to the areas most affected “by this type of meteorological situations.”
Adopting defensive driving, not driving in areas at risk of landslides and ensuring that stormwater drainage systems are free of obstacles are other recommendations from the regional authority.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the southern coast of Madeira and the mountainous regions on orange alert, between 06:00 and 12:00 on Sunday, due to the forecast of “rain, sometimes intense, which can be accompanied by a storm.”
The north coast of Madeira and Porto Santo will be under a yellow warning, in the same period, due to the forecast of rain.
The orange warning is issued by the IPMA whenever a moderate to high risk meteorological situation occurs.
The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever a risk situation occurs for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
The Port of Funchal also issued warnings of strong winds and bad weather for the coast of Madeira, alerting the maritime community and the general population about the precautions to take.
