CNN’s senior political correspondent Malika Henderson told Inside Politics on Tuesday that White Americans need to “accept” their racism, responding to President Joe Biden’s speech in Buffalo, New York, following the mass shooting of the Tops supermarket.
Host John King asked: “The question is, how do you support this in the sense that the President of the United States has said that there is a poison of hate in our politics. This cannot be the history of our time. How is the belt twisted?
Henderson said: “You know, this is the story of our time. This is America’s history. It’s a kind of twin culture of not only gun culture, but also white supremacy culture. And gun culture is somehow used to reinforce white supremacy, as we saw in this case in Buffalo. And as we saw on other occasions a few years ago in El Paso, Pittsburgh and also Charleston. You know, Biden is talking about two Americans here. Many spoke of ordinary African Americans going to Buffalo to escape racial violence. You wonder how the black cities in the north came to be. Many of these people fled oppression in the south, only to face oppression and racist violence in these northern cities. They continued their daily work at the market. This is America. “
And he added: “And the rest of America, the kind of racism that’s been circulating in the country for decades and hasn’t been sufficiently condemned hasn’t been sufficiently eradicated. You know, it’s mostly African Americans who talk about racism. It’s really a white cultural issue that white Americans have to accept. That’s why in most of our politics. African Americans, brunettes, and blacks are often viewed as different or so easily demonized? You know, we’re talking about a kind of white supremacy, but also the way people talk about people crossing the border, the demonization of what’s going on around those people, it somehow threatens Americans as well.”
