An 88-year-old Japanese grandfather with Alzheimer’s killed his 16-year-old grandson.
Last month, Susumu Tomizawa admitted in a court in western Japan to the murder of young Tomomi two years ago, stressing that he had no recollection of committing the crime.
During the trial, Tomizawa’s lawyers wanted Tomizawa to be acquitted of murder because he had Alzheimer’s disease, but he was unable to persuade the court, which sentenced him to four and a half years in prison for intentional murder.
On the night of September 9, 2020, the court heard that Tomizawa, who lived with Tomomi at his home in Fukui, had an argument with his grandson that resulted in his stabbing to death at a young age and a criminal complaint was filed. once the crime has been committed. When it was over, he called the victim’s brother and said he saw his body full of blood.
Meanwhile, the doctors who examined Tomizawa released a report proving that he controlled his actions and was capable of judging right and wrong.
After the assessment, Judge Yoshinobu Kawamura gave his decision stating that Tomizawa had Alzheimer’s, but he was able to evaluate his actions and was therefore responsible for them.
