The European Commission has purchased nearly 110,000 doses of vaccines in response to the monkeypox outbreak in Europe, which will begin proportional distribution at the end of June in countries that have already authorized them.
The contract for the acquisition of 109,090 doses of the third-generation vaccine from the Nordic Bavarian pharmaceutical company was closed this Tuesday by the European Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA).
Given the increase in the number of cases, the contract will allow vaccines to be quickly accessible to all member statesNorway and Iceland.
Once the third generation vaccines are available, HERA will make them available to the countries involved, starting with those most in need.
Taking into account the large number of cases, the deliveries of doses start at the end of the month in the Member States that have already authorized the use of this vaccine, in a pro ratathat is, measured proportionally.
The third generation vaccine currently only authorized in the EU to protect adults against smallpoxbut it also protects against monkeypox.
Hera is the European Commission agency responsible for strengthening health security within the European Union and for preparing for and responding to public health crises in its Member States.
