CNN host Chris Wallace said in an episode of The Ax Files this week that Donald Trump’s “weird” weekend rally in Ohio “showed that the former president was going in a darker, more extreme direction”.
The discussion begins at the 12:55 time stamp.

DAVID AXELROD: What worries me is the more he takes responsibility for corrupt apps, the more he insists the system is corrupt. And what he says becomes more important. And it has been going in that direction for a long time. But how would you rate it now? What do you think is going on in your head?
WALLACE: You know, I think so. Let me make it clear on social media that I’m not comparing Trump to Putin, but there are some similarities there are different ways to respond when under more pressure.
You know, the old saying, when you fall in a hole, stop digging. Not Putin. And you know, one could argue that Trump didn’t compare them to Putin. But in some tactical or strategic sense this is not the case. You know, you had this weird thing over the weekend where he started talking about the country in very dystopian terms and they started playing this music and people raised their hands, and it seems like I’m not an expert at all. It’s moving in the direction of QAnon.
And what’s surprising is that the January 6 investigations are now me, Letitia James, Attorney, under a lot of pressure with the documents and the prosecutor in Atlanta about what she allegedly or may have done. If the New York General defrauded by fraudulently inflating the value of his business. You know, it seems to be going in a darker and more extreme direction in terms of American politics. And, you know, that would be interesting, but not so important, because there are millions of people who seem willing to follow him in these directions.
AXELROD: Yes.
WALLACE: And that’s very disturbing because we’re talking about the future of American democracy right now.
