During the funeral of slain Al Jazeera reporter Shirin Abu Akle in Jerusalem on Friday, clashes broke out between Palestinian and Israeli police, prompting police to respond to the parade. In the hand-to-hand combat, the coffin nearly fell.
The journalist was killed earlier this week while covering the clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian terrorists in the city of Jenin. After weeks of Palestinian terrorism targeting Israeli civilians, Israel conducted a raid to arrest suspects.
This story was published in international media such as the UK. GuardianIsraeli police raided the funeral of journalist Şirin Abu Akle, who was shot dead. However, police said they were attacked by some members of the procession.
The Times of Israel pointed out that the display of the Palestinian flag may have triggered what is considered provocative violence in Israel, particularly in the capital:
Fighting broke out in St. Louis. He was taken to Joseph’s Hospital after Palestinians tried to lift Abu Akle’s coffin on foot, waving Palestinian flags, towards the Old City. The police decided that the procession would begin at the Jaffa Gate, less than two miles away.
Fire
Officers mingled with the crowd and blatantly beat the mourners to force them to lower Palestinian flags. Police used flash grenades to disperse people, including those carrying Abu Akle’s coffin, which nearly fell to the ground.
Police later said mourners near the coffin threw stones and objects at police during the “violent riot”.
Palestinians blamed Israel for the journalist’s death, but Israel said who fired the gun that killed him and that the Palestinian may have been responsible. Israel has asked Palestinian authorities to conduct a joint investigation into the deaths.
On Friday, Palestinian leaders were not convinced and refused to hand over the bullet that killed Abu Akla for forensic examination, according to Breitbart News. False allegations of murder have been made by Palestinians in the past, particularly in the case of Mohammed Al-Durah, a misrepresented boy who was killed by Israeli forces in 2000.
The US Council of Muslim Organizations issued a press release Wednesday, accusing Israel of “killing Abu Akle in cold blood”. When Breitbart News asked for evidence to support this claim, Osama Jammal, a spokesperson, declined to respond, but responded by email: “Listen to how Israelis are changing their stories! !!! This is their BRAND.
