North Korea has counted 15 additional deaths caused by the “fever” days after the country announced it had its first case of Covid-19 on its territory and authorities rushed to impose lockdown measures.

And North Korea’s official news agency said there were 42 dead and 820,620 injured in the country, noting that at least 324,550 people were receiving medical care.

And North Korean President Kim Jong-un said the outbreak was causing “big unrest” in the country.

The agency said that “all provinces, cities and regions across the country have imposed a total lockdown.”

Despite North Korea’s “Maximum Emergency Prevention System” being activated to slow the spread of the virus to unvaccinated citizens, North Korea is seeing a large number of infections daily.

On Thursday, authorities confirmed the discovery of the highly contagious Omicron mutant in Pyongyang, and Kim ordered a nationwide quarantine.

This was the first official confirmation of Covid cases, demonstrating the failure of two years of closure measures and their economic costs.
