The Turkish newspaper Turkey reported that Ankara could reconsider its stance on Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership if they fulfill the five conditions for Turkey.
The newspaper said Ankara had prepared a so -called “Scandinavian file” for Swedish and Finnish diplomats who plan to visit Ankara next Monday, which includes Turkey’s requests and conditions for Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership.
The newspaper noted that “very difficult negotiations” await the delegations of the two countries, who are expected to meet with Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Ünal, and noted that there are five main items in the “Scandinavian file” about Sweden and Finland. Stop “support for terrorism” in the Kurdistan Workers Party and the PKK movement and hand over to the Turkish authorities Fethullah Gülen in Turkey, to stop the detention of members and institutions of the two organizations in its territory, and to designate People’s Protection Syrian units. Ankara considers a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party to be a terrorist organization.
The newspaper said Ankara would ask for “not a promise, but a guarantee”, citing diplomatic sources, stating that no concessions would be made to these five articles, and that Sweden and Finland could reconsider- considering the issue of NATO membership if Ankara requests it. is welcomed.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had earlier confirmed that Ankara’s stance on Sweden and Finland’s participation in NATO was “very clear” and said “Turkey will not accept the participation of countries supporting terrorism”.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that “Sweden and Finland should remove security concerns” for Turkey.
It is noteworthy that Ankara has other requests to the United States regarding the removal of sanctions imposed on it for the purchase of the “S-400” missile system from the United States, provided that Sweden and Finland approve the NATO membership. The reintroduction of Russia and Turkey to the F-35 production program and the supply of “F-16” aircraft.
