Will Turkey launch a new military operation in northern Syria?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that his country’s forces will soon begin operations to establish safe zones on the border with Syria at a depth of 30 km.

He stressed that the operation would begin as soon as the army, intelligence and security preparations were completed, noting that the aim was to “create safe areas” in northern Syria.

On October 9, 2019, Turkey launched Operation Spring of Peace in northeastern Syria against Kurdish armed units.

After the suspension on October 17, 2019, according to the agreement between Turkey and the United States, which was followed by the agreement between Turkey and Russia a few days ago, the operation led to the control of an area of more than 4,000 square kilometers. With a length of 150 km, and including nearly 600 residential areas, it is distributed on the outskirts of the northern province of Raqqa and the western province of Al-Hasakah.

Turkey believes that the United States and Russia have not fulfilled their promise to withdraw Kurdish armed units from the safe zone.

In an interview with Arabi 21, Turkish expert Meta Sehtaoglu confirmed that Turkey is preparing to launch a military operation against the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Organization in the near future to complete its operation in northern Iraq. Emphasizing that next year will be the end date of the Kurdish organization with its branches in Syria and Iraq.
