The German federal election in Berlin last year was so full of irregularities that at least six districts in the capital needed to be redesigned, the country’s election organizer said this week.
At the first public hearing of the German parliamentary election commission (Bundestag), election organizer George Thiel told representatives that half of Berlin’s constituencies (six out of twelve) were violated enough to warrant a second vote in September’s 26th election.
Thiel stated that the election was a “totally systematic failure”. she asked.
Elections held under coronavirus restrictions were also disrupted by the same day as the Berlin Marathon, which caused traffic jams and caused some polls to close for up to two hours due to the lack of polls. , day mirror reported.
Thiel also said that more than 250 stations remained open after 6:30 am, falsifying ballots and allowing minors to vote.
Six Berlin districts listed for potential reelection include Mitte, Pankow, Reinickendorf, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The election administrator also stated that the vote for Reinikkendorf County could be withdrawn as the decision was taken by a very small margin.

In last year’s election, former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was humiliated, with the left-wing Social Democratic Party (SPD) receiving 25.7% of the vote, while the CDU received 24.1% of the vote.
As the SPD did not receive enough votes to run the country directly, current Chancellor Olaf Scholz was forced to form a coalition government with the German Greens and Free Democrats (FDP).
The CDU discussed the irregularities in the voting with Stefan Evers, party secretary general in Berlin: “While the Bundestag elections in other parts of the country were held flawlessly despite the flooding, the elections themselves were a disaster in Berlin.
“Clearly the errors of the Senate are so serious that at least most elections to the Bundestag and parliament must be repeated. State parliamentary elections are likely to fail completely. ”
While six constituencies aren’t enough to scuttle the results of nationwide elections, the re-vote could hurt left-wing Chancellor Scholz, whose party lost to the CDU in local elections in the top state, North Rhine-Westphalia, last week. .
