Simone Tebet, the new face of the Brazilian ‘third way’, receives political support

The Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) and Citizenship parties presented Senator Simone Tebet as a candidate for the Brazilian presidential elections in October.

Simone Tebet, 52 years old and senator since 2015 and only candidate in presidential elections is considered the new face of the Brazilian ‘third way’, after the resignation announced this Monday of the former governor of the state of São Paulo, João Doria.

With Doria gone, the expectation is that the the senator can attract more center-right parties (like the PSDB, Doria’s party) to support her in the elections, which, so far, are highly polarized between the current Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, and former president Lula da Silva.

The former judge and former Minister of Justice Sergio Moro announced on the last day of March that he will not be a candidate for the presidency of Brazil, and his party, União Brasil, has already presented Luciano Bívar, with only 1% of the voting intentions in the last survey conducted by ‘CNN/RealTime Big Data’.

Despite the fact that Simone Tabet registers only 2% in the polls, the expectation of the campaign is that, with the new support announced, this figure will increase substantially.

My greatest mission is to make peace with people. It is talking to people. And solve everyone’s problem. That is why I am willing to stand by these public figures from other parties who will come to say that Brazil has a way out. I believe it”, said Simone Tebet, on Wednesday, during a press conference, quoted in the local press.

In the same press conference, Tebet declared that he had no doubts that he would still have the support of João Doria’s PSDB.

“I have no doubt that, next week, we will be with those who have always been our first allies: the good men and women of the PSDB,” he said, quoted on the G1 portal.

The candidate also advocated for the female vote, stating that “the woman who is successful, the woman who empowers herself, the one who has a leading role, empowers another woman.”

In a note published Tuesday night by the president of the National Executive Committee for Citizenship, Roberto Freire, according to Agência Brasil, the party’s expectation is that this candidacy maintains democracy “in its fullness” and that guarantees the free exercise of institutions.

“With Simone Tebet, MDB, PSDB and Cidadania take a concrete step towards maintaining democracy with a common program: to design Brazil for the 21st century (…). Liberals, environmentalists, the new left, and all those who uphold freedoms and democracy as universal values are expected to join,” she read.

According to the latest polls, Lula has 40% of the voting intentions, Bolsonaro with 32% and Ciro Gomes with 9%.
