The national authorities have already responded to the request of the tycoon and former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, born in Russia but with a Portuguese passport, to authorize the sale of the English club.
The answer was affirmative: “Portugal authorized, this Wednesday night, the sale of Chelsea Football Club,” reported the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, in a note sent to the media.
The two Competent National Authorities -Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Finance- gave the green light to the request received from Roman Abramovich for a humanitarian waiver, allowing the English club to process.
The MNE clarifies that the authorization “follows the guarantee given by the British authorities that the proceeds of the sale will be used for humanitarian purposes, without directly or indirectly benefiting the owner of the club, which is on the European Union sanctions list” . The national position, adds the note, “is in agreement with the European Commission.”
Due to the Portuguese passport, Abramovich needed the Portuguese authorities to carry out the sale of the club he owned.
