Thousands stoned after a Beijing resident violated restrictions to curb the Corona epidemic

A Beijing resident quarantined thousands of his neighbors after ignoring an order to stay home, but eventually led police to open an investigation against him to find out he was infected with the Corona virus.

Chinese capital authorities have ordered hundreds of thousands of residents to stay home over the past five weeks to prevent the biggest outbreak of the Corona virus since the pandemic began.

On Sunday, authorities said a man named San, in his forties, failed to comply with a separation order issued to him after going to a shopping mall classified as “high risk”.

“During his separation at home… he went out and roamed the neighborhood several times,” said Pan Zhuhong, a Beijing Public Security Agency official.

Later, San and his wife were found injured, prompting authorities to impose home quarantine on five thousand neighbors and transfer 250 people to a government quarantine center.

It came on Monday when Beijing began lifting restrictions as parks, museums and cinemas reopened and announced that the epidemic was under control.

China uses a “zero Covid” approach based on strict isolation, large -scale testing and prolonged quarantine to eliminate outbreak hotspots.

While being given heavy punishment for the violations, police launched an investigation against San.

Since the end of April, more than 1,700 infections, mostly with “Omicron” mutants, have been recorded in Beijing, and while this number is considered small by international standards, the Chinese approach follows “zero Covid” considered it alarming.
