Hans Kluge, World Health Organization regional director for Europe, said the organization was not confident at this stage in the ability to fully contain the spread of monkeypox in humans. He explained that while an effective response to the monkeypox outbreak does not require the same massive measures that were needed to combat COVID-19, given that the virus spreads differently.

In a statement, he said: “But – and this is important – we don’t yet know if we can completely contain its spread. To do this, we need a significant and urgent reduction in infections through communication and coordination, community-led action.” and isolation of cases during the infectious period”, as well as effective tracking and monitoring.

Klug confirmed that the spread of the virus occurred amid the lifting of travel restrictions that were introduced due to the Corona virus. Kluge added that the likelihood of the infection spreading to Europe and other countries in the summer is high. “In the coming months, dozens of major festivals and parties will provide favorable conditions for growth (transmission of the virus). But (activities) will also provide great opportunities for sexually active youth to interact to raise awareness and strengthen individual and community protection,” he added.
