The US state of New York has passed new legislation raising the minimum age to purchase semi-automatic weapons. from 18 to 21 years oldto strengthen gun control.
With the decision made this Thursday, New York becomes the first state in the country to restrict the purchase of weapons after the Uvalde shooting and the recent murders in Buffalo (New York) and Tulsa (Oklahoma).
“New York is taking swift action to strengthen safety alert laws, fill gaps and protect communities,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
The new law also prohibits the sale of ammunition that can penetrate bulletproof vests and allows the identification of those who may eventually harm themselves or others if they are in possession of a weapon.
Hours earlier, US President Joe Biden urged Congress and the Senate to ban the sale of assault weapons or at least raise the minimum age to buy them from 18 to 25.

Biden too called for a ban on high-capacity chargersstricter background checks on potential buyers, enforcement of laws to ensure the safe storage of guns, and the “repeal of the immunity that protects gun manufacturers.”
